- The popular and heavily-linked crypto projects XLM and XRP have butted heads over the weekend.
- The online tussle was kick-started by an out-of-nowhere tweet from the official Build on Stellar account, used by developers on the protocol.
- The tweet caused an uproar among XRP stans, who took to the social media platform to deliver zingers that put Stellar right back in its place.
- The hilariously dramatic squabble had no impact on anything else, following in the footsteps of its predecessor – every other internet argument ever.
Look, siblings squabble. Even the tightest-knit of brothers and sisters will have their arguments from time to time.
So, it should be expected that XRP and XLM, given their origins and closely-linked projects, will occasionally butt heads.
However, the most recent online debate (which, as we all know, is the most politically and socially rigid of all debate types) got heated.

Imagine Using the Imagine Insult to Insult an Imaginary (Non-Physical) Currency
I’m not going to lie. The clashing of the two communities seems really, really petty. The insults levelled at each other seem akin to the work of a ten-year-old (so admittedly above the average cleverness of a Twitter post).
Basically, it all started with the official Build on Stellar Twitter account lashing out at XRP for… no apparent reason.
Of course, this had the obvious hit-back of ‘imagine copying XRP’s code and calling it progress’.
For those out of the loop, Stellar’s founder, Jed McCaleb, originally worked with Ripple Labs to develop XRP. Eventually, after having several of his ideas rejected, he formed his own network using much of the same technology.
XRP vs XLM’s Battle of the Century Ends in a Whimper
Next, David Schwartz, better known as JoelKatz and the CTO of Ripple, responded to Stellar with a delightfully cringeworthy tweet.
Presumably, JoelKatz is referring to XRP as the king in some sort of high-stakes espionage operation that has the fate of several nations and their citizens on the line…and not some internet beef.
(Also, sorry, but Bitcoin is the king).
The actual Stellar and XRP accounts have stayed out of the mess, for obvious, professionalism reasons. But it hasn’t stopped high-profile names throwing tomatoes at one another from each side of the fence.
But after about a day of thinly veiled threats and hilariously dramatic tweets (like [insert ‘coin’ army, rise up]), everything went quiet.
Until the next sibling stoush, that is.
