Tezos’ Etherlink unveils Calypso, its third protocol upgrade proposal, promising significant performance improvements and seamless governance integration.

Tezos is set to introduce a significant upgrade to its Etherlink layer 2 blockchain, aiming to enhance performance and streamline operations. The proposed upgrade, named Calypso, marks Etherlink’s third protocol upgrade and promises to integrate seamlessly with Tezos’ existing governance framework, according to Tezos Commons.

Performance Boosts and Efficient Storage

Calypso is designed to significantly boost network performance, offering up to 30 times faster smart contract storage. This improvement is akin to upgrading from a traditional hard drive to a high-speed SSD, facilitating quicker data loads and smoother application performance. The upgrade utilizes Virtual Machine (VM) caching to optimize operations, enhancing the speed and efficiency of decentralized applications (dApps) reliant on fast storage access.

Furthermore, Calypso proposes smarter storage management by reducing the storage needs on full Rollup Nodes. This is achieved by maintaining only the latest block while ensuring the full block history remains accessible through Octez EVM Nodes. The result is a leaner, more efficient system without sacrificing data accessibility.

Enhanced Bridge and Governance Alignment

The upgrade also promises a faster bridge between Etherlink and Tezos Layer 1 (L1). Currently, transferring tez back to L1 can be cumbersome, but Calypso introduces a new precompiled contract entrypoint to expedite this process. This enhancement is expected to reduce congestion and improve transaction flow, aligning with the expansion of the FA token bridge.

Calypso also includes governance updates to maintain alignment with Tezos L1’s recent Quebec upgrade, which reduced block times to eight seconds. By updating its governance contracts, Etherlink ensures voting, security, and decision-making processes remain efficient and synchronized with Tezos L1.

Reliability and Future Prospects

Reliability improvements are a cornerstone of the Calypso upgrade. The proposal includes enhancements to Etherlink’s kernel, which now uses events to notify the sequencer of delayed transaction flushes, thereby reducing downtime risks. These upgrades contribute to a more resilient and reliable system, ensuring better uptime and a smoother user experience.

Etherlink’s continuous infrastructural upgrades over recent months have also bolstered its performance and stability. As Calypso is already live on the Etherlink Testnet, its implementation on the mainnet will depend on the approval of Tezos L1 bakers, who play a crucial role in the governance and decision-making process.

Seamless Upgrades and Community Involvement

The Calypso upgrade exemplifies a smooth, non-disruptive approach to blockchain evolution, avoiding the usual chaos associated with hard forks. It underscores the strength of Tezos’ governance, ensuring steady progress without downtime.

For those interested in the technical specifics or wishing to participate in the governance process, Tezos bakers are encouraged to cast their votes on February 24, 2025. The community can stay updated on developments through Etherlink’s Discord channel or social media platforms.
