- Despite being seen as frivolous by some, many memecoins like Shiba Inu and Dogecoin have sought practical uses beyond hype.
- BONK, a newer memecoin, announced a premium partnership with German football club Borussia Dortmund to improve fan experiences.
- The partnership aims to merge nascent technology with football, promising web3 enhancements and new fan engagements.
- BONK’s integration into Borussia Dortmund’s activities includes social and in-person events for the 2024-2025 season.
It’s probably fair to say that memecoins have a bit of a reputational problem, in that they’re often seen as lacking a practical use case. Still, many memecoins have tried hard to create some utility and meaning beyond purely community engagement and hype.
For example, Shiba Inu has been adding utility to the beloved dog memecoin for a while. Similarly, the Dogecoin community has undertaken projects like adapting the classic game DOOM to the blockchain.

But it’s a much newer memecoin that is drawing attention: BONK. The Solana-based coin “for the people, by the people” which was launched on 25 December 2022, has just made an interesting announcement.
Premium Partnership to Enhance “Fan Experience”
According to a statement, BONK is going to be a Premium Partner of German football (or soccer if you’d prefer) club Borussia Dortmund.
So, what is a Premium Partner, I hear you ask!?
Well, the info we have right now is a little sparse, but it seems Dortmund and BONK want to merge technology and sports. The statement says:
BVB and BONK are now merging leading technology and pure fan excitement as one combination on the global stage. They will share the fast-growing web3 innovation and voracious energy together while building a long-lasting partnership bridging the world of sports and tech.
It seems that BONK, through its exposure to web3, will be able to facilitate some sort of “meaningful and rewarding experience for football lovers of all ages”.
Mitchell Rudy, a Core Contributor at BONK, commented on the club’s rich fanbase and the devs’ excitement to introduce the BONK community to the German league and the European Champions League.
BONK, through the BONKDAO partnership, will be bringing fans of the game new and exciting experiences for the upcoming seasons.

BONK Mascot to Feature at Next Match
It remains to be seen how the fans take to the new partnership; Borussia Dortmund has recently faced criticism over an ad deal with weapons manufacturer Rheinmetall. The club is currently fourth in the Bundesliga after two season matches so far.
Meanwhile, the price of BONK has been slowly trending upward for the past week, gaining 4%, seemingly not responding to the news. BONK currently trades for US$0.00001725 (AU$0.00002593).
At Borussia’s next match, a BONK mascot, simply named ‘The Dog’ will support the team from the sidelines.

This is the club’s first foray into the memecoin-world, but not the first for a German club. In 2021, Bayer Leverkusen featured memecoin Floki while TSG Hoffenheim did a collab with Baby Doge in 2022.
Going forward, it seems BONK and Borussia Dortmund have more plans in the pipeline for fans of digital assets and round balls alike:
Look for BONK activations on social and in person during the Borussia Dortmund 2024-2025 season. BONK can’t wait to merge sports and tech together with Borussia Dortmund to bring football fans worldwide the perks of having the best of both worlds.
