  • Solana’s validator community has overwhelmingly approved the Alpenglow consensus upgrade with over 98% of the vote, meeting the required 33% quorum.
  • The upgrade, developed by Anza, is designed to reduce transaction finality times from over 12 seconds to 150 milliseconds, which is a significant performance improvement that approaches Web2 speeds.
  • Alpenglow introduces two new core components, Votor and Rotor, which replace the current TowerBFT and Proof-of-History systems to accelerate consensus and optimise data transfer efficiency.

Solana (SOL) is set to implement a major consensus upgrade after a two-week governance process concluded with overwhelming validator support.

Alpenglow, developed by Anza, a spinoff from Solana Labs, received approval from over 98% of voters, with a 52% stake participating.

The community governance process for SIMD-0326: Alpenglow is complete. The proposal has passed:
98.27% voted Yes
1.05% voted No
0.69% voted Abstain
52% of stake cast a vote

— Solana Status (@SolanaStatus) September 2, 2025

The vote met the quorum threshold of 33% required to pass. Only 1% voted against implementation, while 0.69% abstained. With formal approval secured, a public testnet rollout is scheduled for Q4 2025, and the mainnet upgrade is expected in early 2026 if all milestones are achieved.

What Brings the New Upgrade?

The upgrade will reduce transaction finality times from over 12 seconds to 150 milliseconds, marking a significant performance shift for the Layer 1 blockchain. According to the Solana Foundation, this level of speed approaches Web2 responsiveness while maintaining L1 security guarantees, enabling new applications that require both low latency and cryptographic finality.

Alpenglow introduces two core components called Votor and Rotor; Votor replaces the existing TowerBFT mechanism to accelerate consensus, while Rotor replaces Solana’s proof-of-history system to optimise timestamping (from its Proof-of-History, or PoH mechanism) and improve data transfer efficiency across validators.

The foundation described the upgrade as a foundational step toward building financial infrastructure capable of operating at internet speed.

The protocol’s architecture was announced in May of this year. Anza’s whitepaper positions Alpenglow as a long-term strategic pivot that not only enhances speed and efficiency but also opens the door for future upgrades, including potential horizontal scaling and dynamic stake distribution systems.
