OpenAI has unveiled a new initiative to fund research exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and mental health, according to OpenAI. The program will distribute up to $2 million in grants to support independent research focused on safety and well-being in this emerging field.
Supporting Independent Research
As part of its broader safety investments, OpenAI is actively seeking proposals that will deepen understanding and catalyze innovation in the AI and mental health domain. By funding interdisciplinary research that combines technical expertise with mental health insights, OpenAI aims to foster a safer AI ecosystem. The initiative invites researchers to submit proposals until December 19, 2025, with selected projects scheduled for announcement by January 15, 2026.
Research Focus Areas
The grant program targets a variety of research themes, including cultural and linguistic variations in mental health expressions, AI’s role in promoting pro-social behaviors, and the robustness of AI safety measures in low-resource languages. Other areas of interest include AI’s ability to provide age-appropriate responses, address mental health stigma, and offer support to individuals experiencing grief.
OpenAI emphasizes the importance of projects that produce actionable insights or deliverables, such as datasets, evaluation rubrics, and synthesized perspectives from individuals with lived experience. The goal is to generate findings that can inform both OpenAI’s safety efforts and the broader AI and mental health community.

OpenAI has previously engaged in related research, such as examining affective use and emotional well-being with its ChatGPT model. The organization continues to work closely with experts to refine its AI systems’ responses in sensitive conversations, aiming to improve safety and well-being outcomes.
