  • Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blažek resigned after accepting 480 BTC from a convicted drug trafficker.
  • The donation is linked to the former operator of Sheep Marketplace, an online hub for drugs and illegal goods.
  • Critics warn the move could set a precedent for legitimising criminal assets.

Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blažek resigned on 30 May following public outcry over his ministry’s acceptance and sale of nearly US$45 million (AU$69.5 million) Bitcoin donated by a convicted drug trafficker.

The scandal broke after Blažek’s ministry shared on X (formerly Twitter) that it had raised close to 1 billion Czech koruna by auctioning off 480 BTC. The funds were reportedly intended to support initiatives such as digitising the justice system, combating drug use in prisons and improving prison staff housing.

Public backlash quickly followed the announcement when a local news outlet revealed that Tomáš Jiřikovský was the source of the cryptocurrency. Jiřikovský was convicted in 2017 of running the dark web drug marketplace, Sheep Marketplace, and other offences including embezzlement and weapons violations.

Following his 2021 release from prison, Jiřikovský has been attempting to recover the approximately 1,500 BTC that was seized during his arrest. In March of this year, Jiřikovský’s lawyer had offered one third of that amount as a donation to Blažek’s ministry. Authorities had previously linked the funds to dark web marketplace Nucleus which has since been shut down.

Jiřikovský maintained that the funds were obtained legally and Blažek did not do any due diligence to determine its origins saying, “I have no way to investigate the matter, and I wasn’t interested so many years after the case”. He suggested in a press conference on 29 May that the donation was Jiřikovský’s form of atoning for his past crimes.

Why should a convicted person not be allowed to give something to the state, for example, as a form of penance?

Police Opens Investigations, PM Distances Self

The police have since opened an investigation into the issue which has raised questions about whether this could inadvertently legitimise criminally obtained assets. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has distanced himself from Blažek ahead of the upcoming legislative elections, following which Blažek stepped down from his position.

After agreement with the Prime Minister Petr Fiala I have decided to resign from the position of Minister of Justice. I am not aware of any illegal actions. However, I do not want to damage the reputation of the government or the governing coalition.

The Prime Minister’s office has stated that an interim minister will be appointed and that they would await the results of the investigation before making any decisions on how to distribute the proceeds of the auction.
