The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning regarding a fraudulent website and internet banking login screen that impersonates The Bank of East Asia, urging customers to exercise caution.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public alert concerning a fraudulent website and internet banking login screen associated with The Bank of East Asia, Limited. This scam has been brought to the attention of the HKMA, prompting an official warning to the public regarding potential risks.

Details of the Fraudulent Activity

According to the HKMA, the fraudulent website and login screen attempt to deceive customers by masquerading as legitimate online banking services of The Bank of East Asia. The agency emphasizes that these scams are designed to extract sensitive personal information from unsuspecting users.

HKMA’s Advisory

The HKMA advises the public to be aware that legitimate banks, including The Bank of East Asia, do not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing users to their websites for transactional purposes. Furthermore, banks will not request sensitive details such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords via phone, email, or SMS.

Customers who suspect they might have provided personal information through the fraudulent website should immediately contact their bank using official contact details and report the incident to the authorities. The HKMA has provided a contact number for the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force at 2860 5012 for such reports.

Additional Precautions

This warning serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity vigilance. Customers are urged to verify the authenticity of communications from their banks and to refrain from clicking on suspicious links. The HKMA continues to work closely with law enforcement to address and mitigate such fraudulent activities.
