The Hong Kong Monetary Authority alerts the public about fraudulent websites and phishing messages impersonating Bank Julius Baer, urging caution and reporting of suspicious activities.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public warning concerning fraudulent websites and phishing instant messages impersonating Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd. This announcement, dated October 22, 2024, aims to safeguard potential victims from falling prey to these scams, according to the official HKMA release.

Details of the Scam

The HKMA emphasizes that these fraudulent activities have been reported and are under investigation. The authority advises that legitimate banks will never send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks directing customers to their websites for transactions. Furthermore, banks will not solicit sensitive personal data, such as login credentials or One-Time Passwords, through phone calls, emails, or SMS messages.

Public Advisory

Individuals who suspect they have shared personal information or conducted financial transactions through these fraudulent channels are urged to contact Bank Julius Baer using the official contact details provided in the bank’s press release. Additionally, victims are encouraged to report such incidents to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre at 2860 5012.

Broader Context

This alert from the HKMA is part of a wider effort to combat digital fraud, which has been on the rise globally. Financial institutions and regulators worldwide are ramping up their cybersecurity measures to protect consumers from increasingly sophisticated scams. The HKMA’s proactive stance serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant in the digital age.
