The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) alerts the public about fake news and fraudulent claims regarding a poverty alleviation project allegedly associated with the HKMA.

Public Alert on Fake News

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public regarding the circulation of fake news and fraudulent activities falsely attributed to the organization. According to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, there have been reports of misinformation involving a purported poverty alleviation project.

Fraudulent Claims Exposed

The misleading information includes claims that an individual leading the project met with HKMA’s Chief Executive, Eddie Yue, to discuss poverty relief funds. The HKMA has unequivocally stated that these assertions are unfounded and entirely fictitious.

Fraudulent Activities Identified

In a related scam, imposters posing as HKMA employees have approached individuals, claiming to manage the distribution of poverty funds. These fraudsters have allegedly requested funds to “activate” accounts necessary for receiving aid. The HKMA has clarified that its personnel will never engage in such activities or solicit personal financial information from the public.

Legal Measures and Public Advisory

In response to these fraudulent claims, the HKMA has reported the incidents to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation. The authority urges anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to contact local law enforcement or the Commercial and Technology Crime Hotline at 2860 5012.

The HKMA remains committed to safeguarding the public from deception and emphasizes the importance of verifying information through official channels.
