The Hong Kong Monetary Authority alerts the public about phishing messages linked to WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued an urgent alert to the public regarding phishing messages associated with WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited. According to a press release from WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited, the phishing messages are targeting users of the stored value facility (SVF).

Details of the Phishing Threat

The HKMA highlighted that the fraudulent messages are designed to extract personal information and account credentials from unsuspecting victims. In its advisory, the HKMA emphasized the importance of not responding to such messages and urged individuals who have already provided sensitive information or conducted financial transactions in response to these messages to take immediate action.

Steps for Affected Individuals

Those who suspect they have been targeted by the phishing scam are advised to contact the relevant SVF licensee promptly. Additionally, the HKMA recommends reporting the incident to the Police or reaching out to the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre of the Police at 18222.

Official Response and Advice

The HKMA’s alert follows a formal report from WeChat Pay Hong Kong Limited, which has been cooperating with authorities to mitigate the impact of the phishing attempts. The HKMA continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to remain vigilant against such cybersecurity threats.
