The Hong Kong Monetary Authority alerts the public about fraudulent websites impersonating Standard Chartered Bank, urging vigilance against phishing attempts and providing guidance on safeguarding personal information.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has raised an alert regarding fraudulent websites and internet banking login screens that are falsely representing Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited. This warning aims to protect the public from potential phishing scams that have been reported to the HKMA.

Details of the Fraudulent Activities

According to the HKMA, these fraudulent sites mimic the appearance of legitimate banking platforms, misleading users into divulging sensitive personal information. The authority emphasizes that legitimate banks, including Standard Chartered, do not send SMS or emails with embedded links directing users to banking websites for transactions. Furthermore, banks will never request personal data such as login credentials or One-Time Passwords through phone calls, emails, or SMS.

Public Advisory

The HKMA advises individuals who suspect they have interacted with these fraudulent sites to immediately contact Standard Chartered Bank using official communication channels provided in their press release. Additionally, the public is urged to report any suspicious activities to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre at 2860 5012.

Preventive Measures

In response to the increasing sophistication of phishing scams, the HKMA encourages the public to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of banking websites. Users should ensure that they are accessing official bank websites directly through trusted sources rather than through links received via unsolicited communications.

For more information on how to protect against such scams, the HKMA has provided resources on their website.
