The Hong Kong Monetary Authority warns the public about a fake HSBC website and internet banking login screen, advising caution and reporting any suspicious activity.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued an alert concerning a fraudulent website and internet banking login screen associated with The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC). This warning aims to protect the public from potential scams, according to a press release by the HKMA.

Details of the Fraudulent Activity

The alert highlights a fake website and login screen that have been reported to the HKMA. The authority emphasizes that legitimate banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to their websites for transactions. Moreover, they will not request sensitive personal information such as login passwords or One-Time Passwords via phone, email, or SMS.

Public Advisory

The HKMA advises individuals who have shared personal information or conducted financial transactions via the fraudulent website or login screen to immediately contact the bank using official contact details. Additionally, it is recommended to report the incident to the Hong Kong Police by contacting the Crime Wing Information Centre at 2860 5012.

Broader Context

In recent years, the rise in digital banking has been paralleled by an increase in phishing and fraud attempts. Financial institutions globally are urging customers to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of communication purportedly from their banks. The HKMA’s warning is part of a broader effort to safeguard consumers in the digital banking space.
