A new sci-fi TV series based on an Ethereum massively multiplayer online (MMO) game is under development, potentially taking the blockchain community to places no degen has gone before!
According to Decrypt, the series will be based on the recently launched Ethereum game Space Nation Online. Roland Emmerich (also known as ‘The Master of Disaster’) will act as executive producer — he’s the director of such classic sci-fi works as Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow.
The series will essentially be a prequel to the game, with the plot of the series ending where the game takes off, potentially increasing interest in the game and blockchain tech generally.

Series To End with The Destruction of Earth
Emmerich said the series would be eight episodes long and focus on the story of a girl who wants to stay on Earth to help wage a futile resistance against an invading alien species:
It tells the story of a girl who wants to actually stay on Earth and defend Earth from these invaders. Now, the invaders—you don’t know much about them; you only know they’re coming. When they come, they’re a much bigger force than you ever can imagine.
According to Emmerich’s co-executive producer Marco Weber, a lot of the tension in the series will revolve around the decision of when to give up the fight and flee Earth:
It’s a little bit of a Noah’s Ark concept with a ticking clock. They know there is an attack coming from the aliens, and when they need to basically decide to stay on Earth and defend or all board Noah’s Ark. That’s the conflict.

In the end, the Earth and in fact the entire solar system are destroyed, leaving the characters in the situation we find them in the game, roaming space in spaceships — reminiscent of Battlestar Galactica. Development is still in the very early stages, Emmerich says the team hopes to have scripts developed by the end of next year with production taking another year or so, with an air date of some time in 2027.
The game Space Nation Online soft-launched in September, with a broader release expected by the end of the year — it’s built on the Ethereum layer 2 network, Immutable zKEVM. In the game the player must re-establish human civilization after the entire solar system has been destroyed by the invading aliens.
Emmerich says he’d consider doing multiple seasons of the show if it proves popular and is considering ending the first season on a cliffhanger, allowing for the possibility of a second season set before the events in the game.
Emmerich HODLing “A Lot Of Bitcoin”
It wouldn’t feel right if the first big crypto-adjacent TV series was made by a crypto-sceptic, so it’s nice to know that Emmerich is himself a big HODLer of Bitcoin:
I kind of own a lot of Bitcoin. I watch it grow, I’m more the ‘HODL’ guy. I never get nervous when it crashes, at the same point, because I know this is a long-term thing.
Both Emmerich and Weber will also receive large amounts of the token associated with the Space Nation Online game, OIK token. However, Weber says they’ve got long lock-up periods, with no plans to pump and dump on other holders:
As founders, and all the team members, we’ve given ourselves very long and conservative cliffs, so there’s no pump-and-dump scheme.

There’s also plans for NFT collections associated with the game, the first of which was designed by Emmerich and is set to drop November 10. If successful, there may be new NFT collections released annually.
