  • Ethereum is introducing Clear Signing to help users better understand crypto transactions before approving them.
  • The ERC-7730 framework standardises readable transaction descriptions across wallets and applications.
  • The initiative aims to reduce phishing scams and strengthen wallet security without changing how Ethereum transactions function.

The Ethereum Foundation has announced a new transaction security standard called Clear Signing, designed to combat phishing scams and accidental wallet approvals that have contributed to some of the crypto sector’s largest losses.

The initiative seeks to replace the machine-readable transaction prompts commonly shown in crypto wallets with simpler explanations users can understand before approving transactions. According to the Ethereum Foundation, many exploits across blockchain applications ultimately succeed because users authorise actions they cannot meaningfully verify themselves.

Simplifying Wallet Security

Clear Signing operates through the ERC-7730 framework, which standardises how transaction intent is described and displayed across wallets. The system is intended to provide users with plain-language summaries explaining what will occur on-chain before they approve a transaction.

The architecture includes a shared description format, a public registry for storing and distributing transaction metadata and an independent review layer where third parties can verify whether the descriptions accurately reflect the underlying smart contract behaviour. Wallet providers can then decide which trusted data sources to use when presenting transaction details to users.

The Ethereum Foundation said the system is designed to support both existing and future Ethereum applications without requiring changes to how blockchain transactions are executed.

The organisation added that Clear Signing is intended to strengthen what it described as the “last line of defense” for users while improving security and accessibility as Ethereum adoption expands.
