- Kabosu, the Shiba Inu behind Dogecoin, has died, her owner revealed, noting she passed peacefully.
- The dog, symbolising Dogecoin and celebrated by fans including Elon Musk, succumbed to leukaemia and liver disease.
- Kabosu’s image went viral, leading to the creation of Dogecoin, the godfather of memecoins.
A sad day for the DOGE community: Kabosu the shiba inu that inspired Dogecoin has passed away. The Japanese dog, described as “Mona Lisa of the internet” died last week, her owner said.
In a blog post, Atsuko Sato thanked Kabosu’s fans and wrote:
She quietly passed away as if asleep while I caressed her.
Kabosu was a rescue dog, so Sato said she didn’t know her exact age but believed she was around 18 years old.
She added that the dog who came to inspire the creation of DOGE had a good life but, in the end, had to succumb to leukaemia and liver disease:
I think Kabo-chan was the happiest dog in the world. And I was the happiest owner.
Kabosu was loved by many but most prominently probably by Elon Musk who called DOGE the people’s money. Kabosu became famous when Sato shared the famous image that is now the symbol for the eighth largest crypto by market cap.

Kabosu Became Memecoin First
In a post viewed over 115 million times Musk shared an image with Kabosu and Harambe, who was killed on 28 May 2016. The Silverback Gorilla who had lived in a Cincinnati Zoo was shot by a zookeeper after a 3-year-old boy had climbed into an outdoor enclosure and was grabbed and dragged by the Gorilla.
Kabosu inspired Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer to create Dogecoin as a joke, poking fun at the speculative nature of crypto – however, it inadvertently became the memecoin of all memecoins.
DOGE is both the first memecoin and the first dog coin.
Both Dogecoin and Shiba Inu rallied following the news but have since dropped slightly in price. Musk is known for sending DOGE to “the moon” with his often cheeky tweets. This time the billionaire was a bit more sincere, tweeting:
OG Doge has ascended to heaven to be with his friend Harambe.
RIP Kabosu and Harambe.
