It’s a regular Thursday morning – I’ve woken up, rolled out of bed and had a quick look at social media. But unlike the usual sea of advertisements and time-consuming posts, something truly exceptional stands out. The 1993 classic, one of the greatest and most influential FPS games of all time, has been deployed on the Dogecoin network. I rub my eyes, to make sure I’m not seeing things – but sure enough, the meme of “let’s put DOOM on literally everything” has finally made its way to the blockchain.
Seeing is believing, so I rush to the Twitter post and smash the link that supposedly brings me to the game.
It takes a while to load, and as each second passes by, the thought of exiting the game and getting to work seems more and more responsible. But, just as all hope appears lost, the main title of DOOM appears, begging me to start a new game.
So now, I’m faced with a dilemma. Do I disregard work and play this game that I’ve already played hundreds of times – with the only difference being it’s hosted on-chain – or do I do the right thing and get to work.
Obviously, I played the game.
What Are Doginals?
DOOM being hosted on the blockchain – the Dogecoin network, no less – is only possible thanks to Doginals. Doginals are the meme-friendly version of Bitcoin’s Ordinals, which allow users to make inscriptions and store data on the immutable chain. This data can take the form of basically anything – images, videos, and apparently, DOOM. This means the entire game is drawing data exclusively from the Dogecoin blockchain and does not rely on any outside sources.
The implications of this could be quite significant, especially as it grants Dogecoin a use case that was previously non-existent. Twitter user @minidogeart spoke to this in a post earlier this morning:
