  • CleanSpark is pivoting toward AI by acquiring 447 acres in Texas for a 300 MW data center, with plans to expand the facility to 600 MW for high-performance computing.
  • The company is scaling its infrastructure in the Houston region to a potential 890 MW, targeting AI-native customers who face constrained access to transmission-level power.
  • This shift mirrors a broader trend as mining difficulty stays near 146 trillion; industry pioneer Bitfury recently exited mining entirely to launch a $1 billion fund focused on AI and crypto.

Pressure on Bitcoin miners has been rising as network difficulty stays high. For instance, CoinWarz data cited in a recent report shows Bitcoin difficulty peaked near 156 trillion in November and was about 146 trillion today.

Against that backdrop, Bitcoin mining giant CleanSpark said it is pushing further into AI and high-performance computing data centers in Texas, framing the move as a way to secure long-term, large-scale power access for compute workloads.

CleanSpark Buys 447 Acres in Brazoria

The company said Wednesday it signed a definitive agreement to buy 447 acres in Brazoria County, Texas. CleanSpark plans a 300 megawatt data center designed for AI and HPC, with a potential expansion to 600 MW.

CEO Matt Schultz said demand for “AI-native” compute is accelerating while access to transmission-level power in strategically advantageous regions is increasingly constrained.

The demand for scaled, AI-native compute continues to accelerate, and access to transmission-level power in strategically advantageous regions has become increasingly constrained. This agreement underscores our ability to source and secure high-quality power at scale while building regional density that is highly attractive to leading AI and compute customers

Matt Schultz, CleanSpark’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman.

CleanSpark said the project is its second strategic initiative in the greater Houston region after its Austin County development. The two locations together represent more than 890 MW of potential utility capacity, and the company said it is engaging with potential colocation and compute partners seeking scalable, long-term AI-focused campuses.

Many other Bitcoin mining giants are either ditching BTC mining completely for AI, or doing both, to avoid losses associated with BTC in current market conditions. One good example is Bitfury, which exited mining completely and turned instead into an investment company focused on AI and crypto.
