  • Standard Solana futures will have a lot size of 500 SOL, while XRP contracts will include 50,000 XRP for standard and 2,500 XRP for micro-contracts.
  • The surge in applications for crypto ETFs and futures products coincides with regulatory shifts in the US, including pro-crypto policies under the Trump administration and the launch of a new SEC crypto task force.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) plans to launch futures trading for XRP and Solana (SOL) on February 10, pending regulatory approval. This will include standard and micro-sized futures contracts, providing traders with flexible options for managing exposure and risk.

The now-removed webpage from the CME Group detailed the proposed contract sizes for XRP and Solana futures, with standard Solana futures contracts having a lot size of 500 SOL, while micro-contracts would account for 25 SOL.

For XRP, standard futures contracts would feature a lot size of 50,000 XRP, and micro-contracts would include 2,500 XRP. All contracts would be settled in US dollars, though future versions could feature in-kind settlement mechanisms, pending SEC approval.

Regarding the removed webpage, James Seyffart summarises it pretty well:

Assuming “beta.cmegroup” is actually a beta/test version of the actual CMEGroup website — looks like CME is expecting to launch SOL & XRP futures on Feb 10. But this isn’t available on the actual website yet.

Honestly makes sense and largely to be expected if true IMO https://t.co/lfMGd8X9KE

Crypto Is In The Air

The surge in applications for cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and futures products coincided with political and regulatory shifts in the US, including the reelection of President Donald Trump and the launch of a new SEC crypto task force.

These developments have raised market expectations for a friendlier regulatory environment for crypto-related financial products.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas also suggested that Solana futures ETFs could enter the market as early as mid-March, although demand could be affected if spot ETFs are introduced soon after:

Once again Stu from VolShares was ahead of the pack. We see a Solana futures ETF on market as early as mid-March. But.. knowing spot coming soon how much demand would there be. I guess we’ll find out.

Other notable applications include WisdomTree’s December 2024 filing for an XRP ETF, making it the fourth firm to submit such a proposal. Other applicants for XRP ETFs include Bitwise, Canary Capital, and 21Shares.
