C.H. Robinson, a global leader in logistics, is harnessing the power of AI to transform its operations, according to a recent report by LangChain. By integrating LangChain’s LangGraph, LangGraph Studio, and LangSmith technologies, the company is automating email transactions in its shipment lifecycle, which has resulted in significant time savings and efficiency improvements.
Addressing Operational Challenges
Despite having advanced digital tools for instant service, C.H. Robinson faced challenges with manual data entry due to the high volume of emails—approximately 15,000 daily—containing shipping requests. These emails often included inconsistent formatting and missing data, leading to delays and inefficiencies. The traditional process required employees to spend up to four hours in email queues and around seven minutes processing each email into an order.
To tackle these issues, C.H. Robinson developed proprietary AI technology capable of reading emails, connecting disparate pieces of information, and automatically generating orders. This innovation allows the company to automate around 5,500 orders daily, saving over 600 hours per day.
Implementing LangChain’s Solutions
The integration of LangChain’s open-source framework, LangChain, provided the company with the flexibility to switch between different AI models and effectively parse user instructions. For more complex logistics scenarios, such as distinguishing between less-than-truckload and full truckload shipments, C.H. Robinson utilized LangGraph. This tool offered the necessary flexibility to manage and update order information efficiently.
LangGraph Studio played a crucial role in prototyping and debugging AI agent interactions, significantly reducing development time. The adoption of these technologies has set new benchmarks for efficiency and scalability in the logistics industry.
Enhancing Quality with LangSmith
LangSmith has been instrumental in C.H. Robinson’s development process by providing real-time observability and error detection. This tool allows non-experts to identify issues and communicate them to subject matter experts, ensuring high-quality project outcomes. The company also leverages LangSmith to experiment with prompt management, enabling users to improve input instructions for more relevant AI-generated responses.
