- Aavegotchi will fully migrate from Polygon to Coinbase’s Base network after a DAO-approved proposal, ending support for its custom layer-3 chain, Geist.
- All NFTs will be cloned and re-minted on Base within 4–6 weeks, while existing Polygon assets will be frozen and unusable.
- The move follows a broader trend of gaming chains shutting down, as Aavegotchi seeks renewed visibility and sustainability in a changing crypto gaming landscape.
Aavegotchi, one of crypto’s OG gaming projects, is packing its bags and leaving Polygon. After a successful community vote on Tuesday, the play-to-earn pet game will migrate to Coinbase’s Base network—a shift that also marks the end of its own short-lived layer-3 chain, Geist.
The decision follows a DAO proposal from Aavegotchi developer Pixelcraft Studios, urging a full, no-turning-back move to Base, and the community agreed.
The proposal passed quorum, greenlighting a transition that will see all NFTs cloned and re-minted on Base within the next four to six weeks. All existing assets on Polygon will be frozen and rendered unusable.
Aavegotchi founder CoderDan, referred to the isolation, onboarding friction, and the operational burden of running a custom chain:
Although Geist is a good idea in theory… the benefits of migrating to our own L3 in this current environment are outweighed by the downsides.

Aavegotchi launched in 2020, back when Axie Infinity was still warming up and “play-to-earn” had yet to become a cautionary tale. Its GHST token debuted later that year, and NFT character drops followed in early 2021. But the space has changed.
As we all know, a wave of hype and crash between 2021 and 2022 gutted play-to-earn ecosystems. We could kind of say Tap-To-Earn (T2E) projects and mini-games on Telegram revived the crypto gaming hype and gave The Open Network (TON) a rise in popularity. But that didn’t last either.
Another Chain Down
The pivot to Base also means Geist is getting sunsetted less than a year after launch. The chain was meant to offer a fee-based, rewards-driven experience using Arbitrum and Base tech. Instead, it’s now headed to the same graveyard as several other 2024 gaming networks.
In February, the Minecraft-style Hytopia project announced plans to shut down its Hychain network. Treasure is pulling the plug on Treasure Chain after budget cuts and layoffs. Xterio Chain is also winding down, with assets migrating to BNB Chain.
For Aavegotchi, the move to Base may offer something the game hasn’t had in a while: renewed visibility and a shot at joining the small handful of crypto games still trying to evolve rather than vanish.
But we’ll see.
