IOTA’s Decade Milestone Ushers in Major Upgrades and Global Expansion

IOTA marked its 10th anniversary in 2025 with a series of substantial advancements and strategic initiatives, according to the IOTA Blog. The year witnessed the implementation of the Rebased protocol upgrade, which is hailed as the most significant technical achievement in the project’s history. This upgrade transformed IOTA into a high-performance, decentralized Layer 1 network, removing the Coordinator and introducing a Delegated Proof-of-Stake network with up to 100 validators.

Protocol Enhancements and Ecosystem Growth

The Rebased protocol upgrade has significantly boosted IOTA’s transaction capacity to over 50,000 transactions per second (TPS) with sub-second finality, making it ready for large-scale enterprise applications. This development was part of IOTA’s broader strategy to support enterprise-grade trade, tokenization, and supply chain solutions.

Expanding Trade and Finance Solutions

IOTA’s efforts to digitalize trade were exemplified by the Trade Worldwide Information Network (TWIN), which utilizes IOTA’s technology to enhance trade processes. Additionally, IOTA played a pivotal role in the ADAPT initiative, aimed at doubling intra-African trade by 2035 through digital identity and interoperable finance solutions.

In the United States, IOTA achieved a significant milestone by integrating with BitGo, offering institutional-grade custody services. This was followed by a partnership with Uphold, facilitating native transactions of IOTA tokens for U.S. users. Furthermore, IOTA’s integration with LayerZero and Stargate expanded its reach across over 150 blockchain networks, supporting cross-chain asset transfers and multichain applications.

DeFi and Identity Innovations

IOTA’s DeFi ecosystem flourished with new tools like Swirl for liquid staking and Virtue for stablecoin liquidity. The IOTA Trust Framework further matured as an open-source toolkit, enabling organizations to build real-world applications on blockchain infrastructure. This framework supports identity, notarization, and tokenization, facilitating secure and compliant solutions.

Community Engagement and Future Prospects

The IOTA community remained active, with initiatives like the Ambassador Program transitioning to an automated rewards system. Developer meetups and events, such as the East Africa Web3 Summit, fostered collaboration and innovation. Looking ahead to 2026, IOTA plans to enhance its infrastructure with the Starfish consensus model and improve network economics with local gas fee markets.

As IOTA enters its second decade, the focus will be on scaling real-world adoption and enhancing enterprise-grade infrastructure. With ongoing protocol enhancements and strategic partnerships, IOTA is poised to bridge decentralized finance, real-world assets, and global trade.
