  • Mayor Eric Adams has launched the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain, the first-ever mayoral office in the US focused on digital asset innovation.
  • Moises Rendon will lead the office under Chief Technology Officer Matt Fraser, coordinating public–private partnerships and federal–state collaboration.
  • The office aims to foster responsible blockchain use, attract talent and investment, and strengthen New York City’s position as a global financial technology hub.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has signed Executive Order 57 to establish the Office of Digital Assets and Blockchain, marking the first-ever mayoral agency in the United States dedicated to digital assets. The initiative aims to promote responsible blockchain adoption, drive economic growth, and position New York as a global hub for financial innovation.

The new office, led by Moises Rendon, will focus on integrating blockchain technology across the public and private sectors while fostering collaboration with state and federal partners to create a supportive policy environment. Rendon, previously a digital assets policy adviser within the city’s Office of Technology and Innovation, will now serve as Executive Director and report directly to Chief Technology Officer Matt Fraser.

Mayor Adams described the initiative as part of his administration’s ongoing effort to “embrace the technologies of tomorrow today,” highlighting its potential to expand opportunities for underbanked communities, attract global talent, and enhance government accessibility. As its first action, the office will convene a commission of digital asset leaders to advise on future initiatives.

First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro said the move reaffirms New York’s leadership in finance and technology while ensuring “working-class New Yorkers are first in line for game-changing economic opportunities”. CTO Matt Fraser added that the office will help city agencies utilise blockchain’s potential to improve transparency and efficiency.

Adams, who previously took his first three mayoral paycheques in Bitcoin and Ethereum, has been a vocal supporter of the crypto industry. As his mayoral term concludes later this year, he stated that the creation of this office underscores his administration’s commitment to maintaining New York’s position as the “crypto capital of the world”.
