NVIDIA announces the deprecation of the Omniverse Launcher on October 1st, aiming to streamline developer access to essential tools and resources directly through platforms like GitHub.

In a strategic move to enhance the developer experience, NVIDIA has announced the deprecation of its Omniverse Launcher, effective October 1st. By phasing out the Launcher, NVIDIA aims to facilitate a more open and integrated environment for developers, according to a blog post by Stephanie Rubenstein on NVIDIA’s developer portal.

Direct Access to Development Resources

The removal of the Omniverse Launcher is designed to streamline how developers access essential tools and resources. Instead of relying on the Launcher, developers will now have direct access to Omniverse SDKs, APIs, and services through popular platforms like GitHub and NVIDIA’s NGC Catalog. This transition promises a quicker and more intuitive process for leveraging the foundational elements of the platform, which is vital for building custom applications for complex 3D workflows and industrial digitalization.

Continued Support for Developers

While the Omniverse Launcher is being phased out, the tools and resources developers rely on remain accessible and fully supported through alternative methods. NVIDIA ensures that these resources are easier to find and more readily available within platforms developers are already familiar with.

The Nucleus Workstation, previously delivered within the Launcher, is also part of this deprecation. Users are encouraged to migrate to the Enterprise Nucleus Server, which is available for enterprise customers and for non-production use via the NGC Catalog. Similarly, the Nucleus Workstation cache is being replaced by the Hub Workstation Cache, accessible through the same catalog.

Guidance for Transition

To ensure a smooth transition from the Omniverse Launcher, NVIDIA recommends several actions for developers:

  • Review legacy tools: Detailed information on legacy tools and transition specifics can be found on the Omniverse legacy tools page.
  • Uninstall the Launcher: Developers can follow the documentation guide to properly uninstall the Launcher from their systems.
  • Explore new resources: Developers are encouraged to start using Omniverse samples and app templates available on GitHub and the NGC Catalog.

For additional support, developers can reach out on the NVIDIA Omniverse Forum or join discussions on Discord.
