- GameFi is in a state of flux, where the most popular titles are simple “clicker” games, while more ambitious games struggle to integrate blockchain technology.
- All that may be set to change with the release of Off the Grid, now available in early access on major gaming consoles.
- The Battle Royale style game boasts impressive graphics and smooth gameplay.
- The developers, Gunzilla Games, have created an in-house blockchain network to build the framework for Off the Grid’s in-game economy.
- The early community response has been positive to the game, even outside the crypto sphere.
Battle Royales have been the biggest genre in gaming for much of the decade. Everyone’s heard of Fortnite, Warzone and PUBG – three of the most successful titles of all time. Now, the battlefield is gearing up for its newest entrant: Off the Grid.
Except, unlike every other prominent Battle Royale game, this one has a twist – it’s built using blockchain technology.

Off the Grid Offers Deep Gameplay Mechanics to Battle Royale Fans
GameFi is one of the most anticipated sectors of the crypto industry. The popularity of blockchain-based titles exploded in 2024, on the back of simple play-to-earn games like Hamster Kombat and Notcoin.
But the depth of these titles has yet to match the potential and ambition of game developers employing DeFi mechanics. While there are certainly some enjoyable games in the GameFi sphere, they are typically lacking in the quality and appeal of major gaming franchises you might find on PlayStation or Steam.
That’s where Off the Grid comes into the picture.
The new Battle Royale title is being developed by Gunzilla Games and has all the features you’d expect from a top-tier game.
The premise is simple – players are dropped into a reality-style gaming show, where they must combat others until they find the last man standing. You can almost compare it to Squid Game, in that regard.
The video that dropped demonstrating early playthroughs was encouraging – with solid graphics and immersive gameplay mechanics immediate standouts.
In-game Economy to be Formed by Avalanche-based “GUNZ” Network
Gunzilla Games has developed its own in-house blockchain GUNZ to host Off the Grid, based on Avalanche’s Layer 1 technology.
Crypto isn’t set to dominate the game. Rather, it will form a major part of the economy, allowing players to earn GUN tokens to buy rare guns and new character skins.

For now, it’s unclear exactly how deep the blockchain integration will go, especially considering the game is available on consoles like the PS5 that don’t offer crypto services.
The GUN token isn’t live on Avalanche yet, either, so there’s no way to earn or sell tokens outside of playing the game. Off the Grid can be played on most major consoles now, but it is technically in early access, meaning significant changes are likely to be rolled out over the coming months.
But for now, the signs are incredibly positive for what might become crypto gaming’s biggest title in history.
